As we know the diamond are classified in to two type of diamonds i.e. Type I and Type II this classification is based on amount of Nitrogen present in the diamonds.

The CVD or HPHT diamonds which are also known as Lab-grown diamonds has the same properties as of natural diamond like

Chemical formula, hardness, dispersion etc.

These type of diamonds which are colourless or known as gem quality white diamonds  after being synthesis it goes under the classification of Type II(either type IIa or Type IIb)

The coloured diamond like yellow diamonds which are also known as industrial diamonds specifically goes under type Ib

This is one of the major reason it has become difficult to separate Lab-grown diamonds from Natural if put together.

There are certain type of technologies are available in the market which can partly or fully confirm the origin of diamond

The machines available in the market today to identify the origin are mainly based on the technique as mention below

PHOTOLUMINESCENCE  SPECTROCOPY

Photoluminescence spectroscopy is a contactless, non-destructive method of probing the electronic structure of materials. Light is directed onto a sample, where it is absorbed and imparts excess energy into the material in a process called photo-excitation.

FTIR

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique which is used to obtain an infrared spectrum of absorption or emission of a solid, liquid or gas. An FTIR spectrometer simultaneously collects high spectral resolution data over a wide spectral range.

RAMAN SPECTROMETER

Raman spectroscopy is the measurement of the wavelength and intensity of inelastically scattered light from molecules. The Raman scattered light occurs at wavelengths that are shifted from the incident light by the energies of molecular vibrations.

the very basic testers which detect only the contain of Nitrogen

It helps you to separate Type IIa diamonds

The lab-grown diamond with Nitrogen present in it , are passed as natural\

Diamond with Low Nitrogen are passed as Lab grown

Photoluminescence ANALYZING:

These are more sophisticated then earlier

It also detects the color pattern generated by diamonds

Some times results differs .

MULTI-STONE ANALYZERS: MULTI-STONE ANALYZERS

These products are for the mass production.Hear we can check multiple stones at the same time.

It will give you the result pass or refer to further test.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)

The FTIR indicates the type of diamond on the basis of atomic structure  and the type of bonds.

It also indicates the containt of Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Boron in Diamonds, this help to specfy they type of Diamond in Detail. This is more accurate to identify the tyoe of Diamond then Photoluminescence.

Raman Spectrometer

The Raman spectrometer available in the industry confirms the  whether  the diamonds is natural or lab-grown with the help of laser. It is the most accurate test avalible in the industry. It Identifies the atomic structure of the diamond  and gives the result.

ASDI

The Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF has developed the Automated Spectral Diamond Inspection (ASDI) – a device which can analyse very large quantities of melee diamonds at low cost. The machine uncovers colourless synthetic diamonds, both HPHT and CVD grown, as well as colourless HPHT-treated diamonds.
